When taking a look at the Miracle Mineral Solutions website, the first thing that strikes me is a bizarre picture of an old man dressed in head to toe white, stroking a tiger in front of a superimposed shrub garden. Next to this ludicrous image lies the statement that ‘This breakthrough can save your life’. No sensational claims here then.

For those unacquainted, Miracle Mineral Solutions (MMS) is a company run by the not-so-aptly named Jim Humble. They offer a product known as ‘Miracle Mineral Supplement’ which claims to be “the answer to AIDS, Hepatitis A, B and C, malaria, herpes, TB, most cancer and many more of mankind’s worse diseases”. MMS claim to have conducted field tests on over 75,000 disease victims with “99% cure results” confirmed by identical findings from the Malawi government. The MMS site states:

“Over 60% of the AIDS victims that were treated in Uganda were well in 3 days, with 98% well within one month. More than 90% of the malaria victims were well in 4 to 8 hours…it also works with colds, flu, pneumonia, sore throats, warts, mouth sores, and even abscessed teeth.”

So what, you may ask, constitutes this miracle formula; how does it work, and why aren’t we taking it? Well according to information from the website, Miracle Mineral Solution is a 28% solution of sodium chlorite in distilled water. In short (ignoring the pseudoscience), it supposedly works by providing the body with a source of chloride dioxide ions that roam the body, aiding in identifying harmful toxins and then helpfully ‘vaporizing’ them, presumably by oxidation.

However, the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has a slightly different view of MMS:

“The product, when used as directed, produces an industrial bleach that can cause serious harm to health.  This mixture produces chlorine dioxide, a potent bleach used for stripping textiles and industrial water treatment. High oral doses of this bleach, such as those recommended in the labeling, can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and symptoms of severe dehydration.”

The FDA also states that there is no research to back up MMS’s success claims.

As a consequence of two adverse reactions to ingestion of MMS, one life-threatening, the Canadian Health Department has banned the sale of MMS as a drug and requested that online retailers such as MMSsupplier.com, remove the product from the consumer market. However, MMSsupplier continue to sell, by labelling their products as water purifiers not intended for human consumption. This type of legislative evasion will be familiar to those who viewed one of the many websites selling the controversial recreational drug mephedrone, branded as a plant growth powder.

All of this raises the question: what kind of profiteering sociopath would continue to sell something like this in full knowledge of the harm it causes?

We return to Jim Humble. His personal website provides videos outlining his approach to ‘touch healing’. Here you can watch Humble mumble and fumble (sorry) with a level of scientific understanding expected of a child. Needless to say, there is no evidence to back up his techniques, despite his empirical claims to the contrary.

Worryingly, despite Humble appearing to have a room temperature IQ, he has slimily evaded administrative pressures on the sale of MMS by forming ‘The Genesis II Church of Health and Healing’. Status as a church puts his racketeering business outside of the influence of the FDA, which is attempting to force a recall of all MMS bottles previously sold and prevent any future trading. An interview with Humble in The MMS newsletterdetails his inspiration in forming the Genesis II Church:

“Do you understand the power that a church has that hasn’t given up its power? Look at the Catholics. Their priests have been molesting women and children for centuries and the governments have not been able to stop it. If handled properly a church can protect us”

Humble’s organisations aren’t simply a potential problem that needs to be monitored. There are claims that over 100,000 people -mostly from African countries where he can operate ‘without a lot of getting permission and problems’- have already been treated. He also mentions, in various interviews, treating victims as far as Australia and Mexico.

A 15 year old, Rhys Morgan, discovered that the MMS worms had spread to the U.K when he signed up to a support forum after being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and was met with widespread condemnation of his attempts to warn potential buyers of the dangers of MMS. Humble also offers a course (for a small fee of £1,037) where other heartless snake-oil salesmen can sign up and learn the tools of the trade before being ordained as a ‘Minister of Health’. This gives them Humble’s blessing to travel and provide the sick and needy with greater access to what can only be described as drinkable swimming pool cleansers. Currently there is an option to practice newly learned healing techniques in Haiti.

In an interview with Project Camelot, Humble declares:

“…I did things like…set up A-bomb tests”

“…I worked on intercontinental ballistics missiles”

“…I was able to wire the first computer controlled machine in the United States”

“…so they called me in and had me repair the Lunar Vehicle…”

Perhaps these claims would provide some harmless laughter if they didn’t hint at utter self-delusion in a man that has no qualms asserting declarations that can be far more devastating to the uninformed when administered in a potent mix of 28% pseudoscience and 72% dangerous bullshit.

Interviewer: “Are you allowed to say here on camera that MMS will cure cancer?”

Humble: “Sure, [laughs] I can say it. MMS will cure cancer [laughs].

I just hope the tiger stays out of all of this.
